Petroleum Costs: A Dual Effect on the Health Care Supply Chain
The price of petroleum has more than doubled since January 2005. As of spring 2008, it had reached $100 per barrel and continued to rise. Rising petroleum prices are having an effect on all sectors of the U.S. economy. Gasoline prices are at all-time highs, impacting consumer spending. According to investment bank Goldman Sachs, the price of petroleum may reach $150 to $200 per barrel within the next six months to two years. This could result in even greater impacts on transportation and consumer behavior.

Prescription Drug Marketing Act (PDMA)
The Prescription Drug Marketing Act of 1987 (PDMA) was signed into law by the President April 12, 1988. The PDMA was enacted (1) to ensure that drug products purchased by consumers are safe and effective, and (2) to avoid the unacceptable risk to American consumers from counterfeit, adulterated, misbranded, subpotent, or expired drugs. The legislation was necessary to increase safeguards in the drug distribution system to prevent the introduction and retail sale of substandard, ineffective, or counterfeit drugs.
